Power rakes are walk-behind machines equipped with sets of metal cutting teeth or blades that rotate beneath the machine. This rotating action forces the teeth through the lawn, cutting and pulling up the layer of stems and roots known as thatch. As the operator steers the Bluebird Thatcher over the lawn, the thatch is left behind to be collected and discarded or put in a compost pile.
Because a typical lawn only needs periodic dethatching, it is often more cost effective for homeowners to rent a power rake rather than buy one. This means that you may not find many power rakes on display at your local lawn equipment retailer.
